ऐसा माना जाता है कि दैत्यों को मारने के लिए भद्रा गर्दभ (गधा) के मुख और लंबे पूंछ और 3 पैरयुक्त उत्पन्न हुई। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार भद्रा भगवान सूर्य नारायण और पत्नी छाया की कन्या व शनि की बहन है।
भद्रा काले वर्ण, लंबे केश, बड़े दांत वाली तथा भयंकर रूप वाली कन्या है। इसका स्वभाव भी शनि की तरह ही कड़क बताया गया है। जन्म लेते ही भद्रा यज्ञों में विघ्न-बाधा पहुंचाने लगी और मंगल कार्यों में उपद्रव करने लगी तथा सारे जगत को पीड़ा पहुंचाने लगी।
क्या होती है भद्रा, और क्यों इसे अशुभ माना जाता है?
उसके दुष्ट स्वभाव को देखकर सूर्यदेव को उसके विवाह की चिंता होने लगी और वे सोचने लगे कि इस दुष्ट कुरूपा कन्या का विवाह कैसे होगा? सभी ने सूर्यदेव के विवाह प्रस्ताव को ठुकरा दिया। तब सूर्यदेव ने ब्रह्माजी से उचित परामर्श मांगा।
ब्रह्माजी ने तब विष्टि से कहा कि- 'भद्रे! बव, बालव, कौलव आदि करणों के अंत में तुम निवास करो तथा जो व्यक्ति तुम्हारे समय में गृह प्रवेश तथा अन्य मांगलिक कार्य करे, तो तुम उन्हीं में विघ्न डालो। जो तुम्हारा आदर न करे, उनका कार्य तुम बिगाड़ देना।' इस प्रकार उपदेश देकर ब्रह्माजी अपने लोक चले गए।

Seeing her wicked nature, Suryadev started worrying about her marriage and they started thinking that how will this wicked ugly girl get married? Everyone rejected Suryadev's marriage proposal. Then Suryadev sought proper consultation with Brahma.
Brahma then told Vishti that ‘Bhadre! At the end of Karan, Baav, Baal, Kaulav etc. you reside and if someone who does home entry and other demanding work in your time, then you disturb them. You should spoil the work of those who do not respect you. ' Thus Brahmaji went to his lok by teaching.
