जैसा कि सभी नक्षत्र ग्रह,तारे पूर्व से पश्चिम कि ओर जाते हुये हमें दिखते हैं,उत्तर दिशा के तारों में ऐसा नहीं होता है ।
यदि ध्यान देकर उत्तर दिशा की ओर आकाश मण्डल पर देखा जावे तो यह विदित होगा कि ये तारे वृत्ताकार भ्रमण करते हैं,अस्त नहीं होते हैं,इनमें एक तारा ऐसा दिखलाई देगा जिसका न तो उदय होता है ,न ही अस्त होता है ,यही ध्रुव तारा है ।
सप्तर्षि मण्डल के पास यह तारा दिखलाई देगा। इसके समीप के तारे अस्त नहीं होते हैं ,इसी तारे के चारों ओर अन्य तारे भ्रमण शील रहते हैं ,ऐसा ही दक्षिण ध्रुव में भी देखा जाता है ।
